Vouloir, pouvoir & devoir

Year 8  have been looking at the present tense of these verbs.

They are modal verbs and are generally followed by an infinitive.

  • Vouloir = to want to
  • Pouvoir = to be able to (“can”)
  • Devoir = to have to (“must”)

We have used these basic translations, although devoir is a verb with various meanings – it can refer to debt (Elle me doit mille euros – she owes me 1000 euros), obligation (Vous devez attendre le bus – you must wait for the bus) or probability (Le bus doit arriver à 10h – the bus is supposed to arrive at 10 o’clock). Tone of voice and gestures when speaking, or other text when reading will give you clues to the meaning of the verb each time.

  • Je peux jouer au golf – I can play golf
  • Il veux jouer au golf – He wants to play golf
  • Vous devez jouer au golf – You have to play golf

These verb are all irregular, but they do follow some of the patterns of verb endings. What can you remember?

Year 7 Assessment

Salut Year 7!

Don’t forget that you’re having your Module 3 assessments this week.

You should know how to say where you live (including the type of house and where that is), rooms in the house, (especially the bedroom and what’s in it), where things are (prepositions), talking about what you do and don’t do in the evenings, telling the time and larger numbers!

It seems like quite a lot, but it’s work we’ve been doing all term.

Bonne chance!

Futuroscope

Year 8 pupils have been looking at the Futuroscope website.

Futuroscope is a theme park in the Vienne departement of France, about 10km north of Poitiers. Click the image or go to www.futuroscope.com. There is an English version of the website – look for the flags in the top right.

It was opened in 1987, and the attractions are mainly based on multimedia, and audio-visual techniques, with a few “slide down the ramp and get wet” rides thrown in (have  a look at the “Le Splash des Loustics” or “Nipper Dipper” video on the website).

If you were visiting Futuroscope, where would you go first?

The buildings, or pavillons at Futuroscope are part of the attraction. They are built of metal and glass and come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Which one do you like most?

Some more work from Year 8

By now you should have had a chance to look at some of the written work other people have done.

You won’t have seen all of the work, but here are some links to more of the storybirds.

Have a look at them and make a comment on this blog. Remember that all comments on this site are moderated and will not be published if I feel that they are going to cause offence to anyone. Don’t write anything you wouldn’t like your parents, or grandparents, to see!

Peer reviews

This week pupils in Years 7 and 8 are going to be reviewing the work that they and their classmates have done this half term

Year 8 will  be reading the work that has been produced for the task “Qu’est-ce que tu as fait le weekend dernier?” You will have the opportunity to comment on the work other people in the year group have done, and to reply to comments about your own work. Remember to be honest and constructive in your comments.

Year 7 pupils are going to be completing their descriptions of rooms in a house in draft. Remember that the focus was on use of prepositions! When the drafts are complete you’re going to pair up to edit your work.

Accent shortcuts

Remember that lots of words need accented letters .

You can use these accent shortcuts if you have a full sized keboard (i.e. with a separate number pad)

You need to press the ALT key, then the number shortcut, e.g. ALT 133 = à, ALT 130 = é

Of course, there are other ways of adding accents to letters.

Le weekend dernier Y8

Qu’est-ce que tu as fait le weekend dernier?

Before the end of this half term you need to create a piece of writing about what you did last weekend. You can use your imagination – it doesn’t have to be true! Try to answer these questions

  • What did I do?
  • When did I do it?
  • Where did I go?
  • Did I like it? Why?
  • Who was I with?

How are you going to present your work?

A diary? A letter? A comic strip/ A picture book? Plain text?

Have a look at this example from Storybird.

le weekend dernier

I’ll post some examples of Year 8 work a bit later.
